RECHERCHE URBAN SOILS

Urban Soils Project

Relationship between City-Dwellers and Soils: How to use Urban and Peri-urban Soils to face the Urban Challenge?

Project coordinator: Louiza Boukharaeva
Project manager: Marcel Marloie

Project proposed the December 17th 2012 in response to the 4th Coordinated Call for Research of Snowman Network.
Accepted for funding in June 2013
Duration: October 2013 – September 2016

Snowman network presentation: http://www.snowmannetwork.com/main.asp
The SNOWMAN Network is a transnational group of research funding organizations and administrations in the field of Soil and Groundwater in Europe.
SNOWMAN network wants to develop and share relevant knowledge for the sustainable use of soil and groundwater. For the development of relevant knowledge we have a research program that we execute by organizing calls for projects. We share the knowledge developed in these projects and we share the knowledge that is available among the members of the network.

Objectives
The question is to identify how better use the urban and outer-urban soils to confront three dimensions of the urban challenge: poverty, violence, and major ecological risks.

Work Packages
1. Family urban collective gardens and their economic and social perspectives
 To identify the collective garden sector in the European Union: surfaces, location, proportion of city-dwellers concerned, legal status, and services that are given to society. This identification permits to evaluate the potential contribution of this sector to resolve the urban crisis and inserting the future climatic refugees in urban agglomerations.  To transform the economic, social and ecological services of garden soils into official indicators that can be used by statistical institutions. This is a contribution of a new measurement of economic performance and social progress.
2. Perceptions and practices in Family Urban Agriculture
 To identify the functions of the collectives gardens in the struggle against poverty (food, health, leisure activities) and violence; the potential for an alternative to the suburban housing model; the existence or lack thereof of patrimonial practices according to legal status; the
emergence of a new culture, making the city-dweller an actor in working the soil; the increasing ascendancy of agrobiology.

URBAN AGRICULTURE AND HEALTH / AGRICULTURE URBAINE ET SANTE

The objective of this work Package is:

  • To elaborate an integrated model of the relationships between soils, gardening and health; containing two components: 1/ sanitary risks caused by the soil pollution; 2/ positive functions for the health in the physical, psychological and emotional plan.
  • To produce tools for aiding decision-making.
